Course Structure:

The Course is divided into a number of key topics delivering in five modules

Module One: Attaining a Trust’s Objectives
Module Two: Developing Leadership
Module Three: Implementation and Monitoring
Module Four: Increasing Value
Module Five: Building a Governance Culture
Personal Development

Outcomes:

Module One:

Gain a knowledge and rationale of why and how their governance obligation shapes the working of the Trust. In this session they will also gain an insight of the determinants of sound governance and an understanding of what the participants can expect to experience when all is well and also when things are not going so well. Participants will also take away an appreciation of the reason for and shape of legal matters and more importantly the Board’s role in ensuring compliance is maintained at a high level.

Module Two:

Participants will gain an even greater understanding of the decision-making framework and various forms of decision-making required for different aspects of their governance roles. They will also begin to recognise the qualities of a strong leader of the governance process and begin to take a more considered and less subjective approach to decision-making. In addition they will gain a greater insight into the behaviours that lie behind good decision-making and the behaviours they need to continue to develop as they expand their knowledge and involvement in governance and trusteeships.

Module Three:

Trustees will be able to strategically shaped the direction for their Trust and will have a roadmap to determined where the Trust is going: short, medium and long term. The Trust will consider where its focus can add value across the Trust’s activities and how the Trust delivers services to its stakeholders

In addition the trustees will consider what the Trust needs to build its organisation capability to drive and deliver shareholder value.

Module Four:

This session works through many of the financial tools pointing out ways to use them to get behind the numbers and understand what is really happening – we call this understanding the stories the numbers are telling.

Trustees will leave this session with new ways of interpreting data and will begin to find more meaningful information in the data. They will also begin to look even harder at the data presented to ensure they that are not being misled by presentation or the way the information is presented. In this way trustees will gain a deeper appreciation of how to seek out data or information that is missing.

Module Five:

This session, delivered in two parts, follows on from the work completed in previous sessions by considering the agreed strategic intent and the structure, Trustee composition and resources needed to achieve it.

Part one of this session shapes both the working framework for the Trust over the coming months (0-18mths) ensuring there is a collective agreement as to what the Trust now needs to address. After this first part participants will leave this session and be able to take its content straight into their Trust meetings.

Part two turns attention on the individual trustee. Each participant will leave will an Individual Work Plan which will assist him/her to improve his/her skills sets, knowledge and comprehension of the workings of their Trust.

All Trustees will leave with a Learning Journal which will include readings, notes, guidelines and their own completed work plans.

At the end of this course participants will know what is expected of them as trustees by:

- Gaining an understanding of what it means to be a trustee
- Understanding the skills required to be a trustee
- Gaining an insight as to what decision-making capabilities it takes to be an effective trustee
- Understanding what is effective Board performance
- Knowing how best to set up processes and procedures that build the foundation of effective governance
- Having an understanding of whether they are ready to take on a trusteeship and if not what they will need to do before accepting a position.

5 x 1 full day modules
1 module held each month
$350 per day per attendee (5 days sessions for each Trust) which equates to $1,750 per person for the full course, or
$10,000 per course for each Trust/business unit with a maximum number of 10.
